Windows Unwrapped Ep 7 “Internet Explorer makes you stupid?”

Windows Unwrapped Episode 7 recorded Sunday July 29, 2011

In todays show we are going to talk about XP security woes, the new Mango Beta, answer some Windows critics, and more …

Windows XP PCs breed rootkit infections (Computerworld)

Windows XP computers still running SP2 are making up the vast majority (58%) of zombie systems infected with rootkits according to a 600,000 computer survey done by Avast.

As many as ⅓ XP users are still at SP2 likely because they are pirating or not technically savvy enough..

Windows 7 held 12% while only a tiny portion of that were x64.

WinRumors thinks that Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango” is coming in September
A bunch of devices are set to be released in September.   500 new features.  Social media integrations is the coolest in Dean’s opinion.  Very nice “flow” so far.

Streaming from the SkyDrive will be available in mango as well.  Tonido is good for non-mango users to stream.

Microsoft patents reveal touch+pen gestures (Winrumors)
Copy, Staple, Cut, Tear, Punch-out, Edge, stamp, and brush look mostly like gestures for an application specific need rather than a general OS … but very cool!

Admin stuff with Windows Sysinternals tools (Live tools)
Process Explorer is a great tool for seeing what’s running
Disk2VHD to create a virtual hard drive from a physical disk
A great video demoing the tools at http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd/NorthAmerica/2011/WCL304

Microsoft haters are annoying.

AptiQuant “study” states that IE users are stupid claiming IE users have lower IQ’s…

Does this mean that lower IQ people generally aren’t techy and don’t download “3rd party” browsers in Windows or that people that actually prefer IE over chrome or firefox are labelled dumb..  See what just happened there?

John C Dvorak’s PC Magazine article sayings WP7 UI has “no soul”.

He claims that because the UI is so slick and seems so perfect that it’s souless.  He compares it to a cute girl that everyone wants but knows she has no personality.  This guy probably also uses a MAC for the same reason…. imperfection…. oh snap!  (John Dvorak is well know for his anti-microsoft stance)

His invocation of Wabi-Sabi in the article makes me thing that Dvorak has finally lost his marbles.

Pentagon sharing secret cyber attack information with defense contractors

Lockheed Martin is the contractor behind this and they were recently breached stemming from the RSA breach. Some blogs are insinuating that this hack was staged for political gain because of this project.

Topics

Hyper-V in the Windows 8 client

Article describing how Hyper-V was found in the latest leaked build of Windows 8 and what has improved.

Seems like it’d have to be a type II hyper-visor because most of the processors for mobile devices do not support virtualization

Windows 8 includes new Protogon file system, return of WinFS? (winrumors)
This could be Microsoft’s next take at the old WinFS that appeared, then disappeared in the Vista betas (LongHorn)

This should probably be a “no brainer” because they are aiming for host hardware that doesn’t have a physical hard drive.

IT Unwrapped Episode 7 – What Every IT Person Should Know

IT Unwrapped Episode 7 for Sunday June 19, 2011

Welcome to IT Unwrapped your entertaining source of IT related frivolity

In todays show, we’re going to talk about some more security breaches, hacker in-fighting, we pour one out for Rim, and what every IT person should know …

Topics

Citi Credit Card Hack
Bigger than originally stated (was 210K, now 360K people).  This is the second breach for Citi Bank announced in a weeks time on June 9 (two Thursdays ago).

Account numbers and email addresses were taken but no SSN.  “The Times reported this week that the hackers easily penetrated the company’s network by using a commonly known technique called parameter tampering against a vulnerability in the Citigroup website”

The other attack was three from Romania and one from Austria in an ATM scheme where they replaced key pads to capture pins

Cnet has a great spreadsheet of the latest know hacks and breaches

Sega hacked just like Sony – Lulz wants revenge
“Customer email addresses and birth dates, which can be read in plain text were taken, as were passwords, which could not be read in plain text because they had been scrambled or encrypted using security software before being stored in the database.”

“Sega – contact us,” Lulz said in its Tweet to the video game developer. “We want to help you destroy the hackers that attacked you. We love the Dreamcast, these people are going down.”

LulzSec hackers taunt with a POTS telephone hotline
“A recorded greeting featured a man speaking with an exaggerated French accent explaining that “Pierre Dubois and Francois Deluxe” were unavailable because they were up to mischief on the Internet.”

“Incoming 614-LULZSEC calls now redirect to HBGary. You take care of the horde while we’re gone @AaronBarr, thanks mate. Bye for now.”

RIM is going under?
Article that says that RIM stock is plummeting and they are planning major layoffs.  IT pro’s beware of using RIM tablets and/or other products as a company standard.
Why RIM is getting left behind – Crap hardware??
Network world says RIM has had too many issues with not having cutting edge hardware when compared to other companies.  I think it’s probably a combination of that and the fact that they just don’t have anything above Apple or Android tablets.  They seem like a generic version of big name tablets without the app environment.  Their apps store hold about as many apps as the Windows marketplace for the WP7.  The difference is that Microsoft seems to have deeper pockets to make things happen.  MS also released API converter for the Android and iPhone apps.  MS Windows 8 tablet looks as if it will blow the Blackberry OS away and MS also is saying that they will have a major OS release every year now for their phone (maybe tablet).

The 30 skills every IT person should have
Taken from this weeks Spiceworks community post of the week
One thing not on the list… Programming!!  Steve said this when I first started and it’s absolutely true.  Programming helps IT people get past some pesky hurdles.  You don’t have to be an awesome programmer but knowing how to throw together simple apps can save you (and/or your department) from having long manual processes to get things done.

Windows Unwrapped Episode 2 – “HTML5 and JavaScript For Developers?”

Dean – Windows Unwrapped Episode 2 for Sunday, June 19, 2011

Today we will be talking about another leaked Windows 8 beta build, developers anxiety over HTML5, some features coming to Windows 8, and another great app pick of the week!

A new [leaked] build of Windows 8, build 7989, has surfaced
RedmondPie.com – “Among the new features found, there’s a new virtual keyboard, per-feature licensing and SMS support”

Tom Hounsell (known for hacking the HTC Youtube app so that it can run on any Windows Mobile 7 phone) hacking around the code has revealed some really cool API’s

Windows 8 and anxiety over HTML5
Developers are getting crazy anxious over the possibility of being forced into a new language

… and to that, I say “Impossible”.  Microsoft can’t both be backwards compatible AND force all developers to use only HTML5/Javascript at the same time.  They wouldn’t and they can’t.  If the OS is going to be backwards compatible, it must support the traditional .NET development environments as well as c++.

I believe that they are just stating that they have an additional way to develop for Windows aimed at only the square tiles – after all, aren’t they just anther form of desktop widgets, anyways?

This all started when Microsoft Vice President Julie Larson-Green, in charge of the Windows Experience said that a weather app uses “our new developer platform, which is, uhh, it’s based on HTML5 and JavaScript.”

Does this mean that HTML 5 and JavaScript are going to be the ONLY dev platform or another developer platform?  I think people are running wild with a small bit of information and should wait until new information comes out.

Microsoft could just officially clarify this before too much panic sets in.
Microsoft community program manager Pete Brown said in a Silverlight forum -
“Nowhere in there is a Microsoft person saying that HTML/Javascript are the exclusive way to write applications. It’s a new way, it’s an exciting way, and, let’s face it, a way that is likely to be hugely popular with web developers” then later – “None of us at Microsoft can say anything until //build/ in September. No one likes that, including me. That’s all we can do, however.”

Windows 8 includes Powershell 3.0 and AppX distribution cmdlets
To make way for a new App Store?  Unified application delivery platform (bye-bye MSI)

XBOX Live coming to Windows 8
Seattle Times Interview with Mike Delman, vice president of global marketing for Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business group

This is awesome! You can buy a movie or a game from XBOX Live and use it on your PC!  Will this damage XBOX sales, though?  Last week, Steve dreamed of the Kinect controls coming to the Windows 8 desktop interface … could that actually happen, now?
-speaking of kinect, Dean saw an article that said that people will have virtual dressing rooms??  Kind of cool.  oh the possibilities.

Qualcomm mobile chips will run Windows 8
Microsoft furthering it’s stake into all of the mobile chipsets to enable it to run on as many devices as possible.  Copying Apple?  I doubt it!

  • Windows 8
    • Is Microsoft copying Apple or is Apple copying Microsoft?
      • Both are bringing tablet interfaces to the desktop
      • Both are introducing split keyboard designs that are very similar
  • People seems to be getting worked up about the new interface
    • They seem to think that the new interface is something that will be pushed on everyone as the only way to work
    • Things to remember
      • There will be many versions of the Windows 8 that will most likely be customized to the hardware that it sits on (there won’t be a windows desktop on the WP8)
      • Windows 7 tablet sucks…  There had to be something done and the new interface gives many flexibilities
      • People seem to be politicians by taking both stands on the topic so that they can say “told you so”
      • I don’t personally like the big tile interface for a mouse and keyboard and will likely  just use the standard Windows desktop interface on the desktop and laptop.  For tablets and phones, the desktop interface makes now sense.
